image.png

image.png

image.png

image.png

image.png

image.png

image.png

image.png
image.png

image.png

image.png
image.png

image.png

The tragedy of climate change is that it alters our environment so slowly that we become comfortable with it. We fail to recognize that the whole earth shares a single breath. Upon entering the proposed Air Quality Index Pavilion (AQIP), visitors witness an immediate transformation of natural light as it is filtered through vertical layers of tinted curvilinear glass. Immersed in layers of optically simulated air pollution, visitors are invited to explore and contemplate a global phenomenon of hazardous atmospheres, indexed by the colourful language of light.

image.png

The quality of life is related to the quality of air. As global cities tackle worsening environmental conditions, the AQIP indicates that the appearance of natural light can provide us with a valuable tool for measuring the hazardous impacts of industry. The structure is a ten meter-wide, rose-like form with 4-inch-thick glass panels, designed using parametric design methodologies. Visitors are encouraged to explore the tall, blooming layers of tinted glass until arriving in the center, where they are visually severed from the outside world. The massive glass panels are similar to the sculptures of Richard Serra; they are designed to be self-supporting and stand apart, but only together can they be understood as a greater message. The indexical representation of cities’ pollution levels is reflected in the pavilion’s layers of various warm tints and transparencies. These colours are derived from real data to visualize the pollution of specific cities chosen to exemplify their country’s worst current air quality.

image.png

These colours are derived from real data to visualize the pollution of specific cities chosen to exemplify their country’s worst current air quality. Not only does the Pavilion change the quality of interior light but it allows the visitor to view the outside environment through different filters of global atmospheres. It becomes an experiential map to investigate and connect this global phenomenon. The AQIP allows people to experience different levels of air pollution and make them realize that Pollution has the power to mask the connections between people, even in public spaces. Through applying the Real-time Air Quality Index (AQI),

image.png

Through applying the Real-time Air Quality Index (AQI), a global spectrum of Countries’ most polluted cities were chosen. Through utilizing the graphs that indicate different amounts of primary and secondary pollutants, pigment and transparency levels were created and assigned to glass panels representative of each chosen city. The sixteen panels represent different levels of pollution from healthy to hazardous. It is only when this global pollution is seen layered upon itself that a true understanding of the greater crisis can be visualized. The AQIP uses the ephemeral language of transparency and natural light to translate scientific, atmospheric effects into a personal experience of this global crisis.

image.png

The changing colours of the atmosphere can be described through the scientific principle of Rayleigh Scattering, which describes the physical interaction between light, atmospheric particles, and gases. Particulate matter in the air absorbs and scatters photons of light, effectively colouring the sky red, yellow, orange, and brown. This occurs due to the taller, blue wavelengths of light being filtered through gasses in the earth’s natural atmosphere. This yellowing effect, combined with the reddish pollutant NO2, and the brown hue of particulate matter, creates the yellow-orange gradient scale used in the design. This gradient of layered translucent panels aims to reflect the effects of a polluted atmosphere, even to the point where our visibility degrades or is completely obscured at the center of the pavilion. The beautiful hues created by this effect are born from ugly exploitation.

As one walks through the layers of the pavilion, the visibility of the outside world becomes distorted and hazy as the tinted glass increasingly darkens toward the middle. At the center, viewers encounter a near-total absence of natural light. Looking upward, a clear view of the sky provides a sense of relief, and a new perspective of the natural environment. This design is inspired by the works of artists James Turrell and Olafur Eliasson, and references the windows of the Hagia Sophia, and the ‘Eye of God’ built into the ceiling of the prison cells in the Eastern State Penitentiary.

image.png

Toronto is an ideal site for proposed construction, because it is one of the most multicultural cities in the world and has an exceptionally clear atmosphere. This experience of directly engaging with the beautiful but oppressive visual effects of pollution is intended to be immersive and emotional. The AQIP enables visitors to personally visualize the global effects of pollution on the quality of light and visibility as it filters the world surrounding us. Air pollution is a worsening problem that many cities around the globe are tackling as the negative effects on health, aesthetics, and air quality dramatically affect a region’s quality of life. The pavilion acts as a quantified symbol of the industrial effects of global air quality, and as a symbol of opportunity that the world’s communities may come together to return all cities to light.

A holistic approach to providing Chile’s coastal informal settlements with water, light and energy. The prototype utilises Chile’s abundance of solar energy and seawater to create a solar desalination skylight, which emits natural diffused light, produces drinking water, and utilises leftover salt brine for energy creation' background: Global urbanization has created a complexity of challenges, including rapid population growth, and inequities within the infrastructure and economic development.

image.png

By 2050, it is predicted that 3 billion people will be living within informal settlements. An informal settlement is housing that falls outside of government control or regulation. These communities are excluded from regular access to the benefits of urban development, including public services, infrastructure, public spaces and collective facilities. Chile, currently has around 110,000 families within 800 informal settlements communities. Typically, these homes have boarded up windows for security, privacy and protection from the extreme conditions. This results in little to no internal natural light. In order to provide an artificial light source, energy is usually found by hacking into the formal systems outside of the settlements. This is highly dangerous and has caused many devastating fires within the communities.Water is another essential resource to which they have no formal access. In most cases, this can only be transported to the settlements by water trucks once a week at a very expensive price.

image.png

DESIGN IDEA: Resource access was a central focus in designing this architectural lighting prototype. I identified two raw resources which these communities had unlimited access to: sunlight and seawater. I wanted to achieve a design which was sustainable, passive, and created a striking feature inside the dark settlement home. In my development process it became apparent that I could address the lack of indoor lighting and water access by creating a hybrid skylight and solar desalination device. In this way the solar energy required to evaporate the seawater was optimized. The diffused internal light creates a soft ambience for the living space where most activities can take place (studying, family meals, meetings). The collected desalinated water adds a morphing dappled effect that changes the mood throughout the day.

image.png

The design was inspired by biomimetic surfaces, emulating the leaf venation networks and micro grooves, thereby improving the channeling of condensed water to increase performance. The results showed that the prototype could produce 440 ml of purified water a day, and reduced salinity levels from 36,000ppm (parts per million) down to 20ppm. I considered how the salt brine waste from the evaporation process could be used to create a source of energy through a reaction when placed in storage tubes holding copper and zinc. These 12 salt batteries provided 9.53 volts, powering a LED light strip during the night and charged by a mini solar panel during the day.

image.png

Testing and evaluation were done during a one month long expedition to the informal settlement communities in Antofagasta, Chile. Through collaborating with a local NGO (TECHO) I had the opportunity to install my device into a home within the settlements. This was a unique opportunity to engage with many from the local community. Here I got valuable feedback to help evolve and evaluate the idea.

image.png
image.png

Informality within cities is a global phenomena and needs to be urgently addressed for the creation of safe, sustainable and prosperous communities. Governmental systems will face growing stresses such as climate change, privatization and resource scarcity in the near future. Therefore, we need to re-imagine our living environments in a sustainable and autonomous way to survive.

An architectural response: Thanks to light, natural as well as artificial, words are restored and given back to those who need them most. The light becomes words, bearer of the message. During the process, the sun rays passes through an opening of the tent, reach the surface of a mirror, which in turn reflects the sunlight onto the surface of the tent.

The tent acts as a screen; a screen to communicate. To communicate with the passersby, to communicate to the city.

image.png

Socio-cultural context: Based on the data collected by "La Strada", the main support for the Brussels’ homeless, the number of homeless people or badly housed people in the Brussels-Capital Region has more than doubled in 10 years, reaching a number of 4,175 in 2018, and more than 50,000 in the whole Belgian territory. How to be part of society when you are rejected, without papers, money or roof? The weakest, victims of a non-egalitarian system, end up far from sight becoming, day after day, more and more invisible. It is necessary to bring the homeless people back to society, allowing them to express who they are, with their name, their story, their knowledge, their sensibility, their course of life.

image.png

In order to highlight those whom we never look at and to give a voice to those whom we don’t listen at, our proposal aims to give these people a voice by light. This will create an interaction in the public space, allowing people from different background to meet and share. To live together and live in solidarity, we must enhance exchanges and engage in solidarity to create a bond between all.

image.png

Ephemeral Fireflies (poetic introduction): Society is a great bright web, where people compose the meshes. And so do the individuals, as fireflies composing the whole. The web is a complex textile, rich in diversity, that shines with its countless nuances. To take care of the society and to live together are the guarantee of the protective mesh, of the solidarity mesh. And it is therefore necessary to weave lights on this large canvas. Like fireflies, small bright lights flash in the shade of bright cities. In the cold and silent darkness, with the fabric of a tent as only protection, fireflies are seeking their way. They wander lonely trying to keep their lights to life while meeting on the public space. All of them live and gather on streets, places or squares, with their own story. They are driven by reasons that we do not know. but no matter why or how, they are human.

Communication between the world and the sun, the most ancient friendship, is hampered by human and human productions. New urbanization methods and architectural researches should be developed to keep this communication constant. Along with SunCity, these new methods are continually researched and produced. The game raises awareness of the importance of daylight for the players.

image.png

Use build and carve tool to distribute daylight throughout the city. After joining a city in planet sunlight, players can start shaping the city to create equal daylight access throughout the city with the build and carving tools from the game set. Build tool has different building blocks with different daylight transmittance rates. Carve tool involves blocks such as parks, roads or supporting scaffold to create empty areas and gaps between building blocks and allow daylight to pass through. Players can build or carve with three different impact areas of 1 block, 9 blocks(3x3), and 25 blocks(5x5). Different ranges allow the player to build in the city planning scale and also architectural scale.

Artificial light pollution is a huge problem in the modern world. Every day we turn night into a day thanks to technology. But on the other hand, due to it the whole diurnal cycle is disturbed. Which means that humans, animals and plants are deprived of a natural need to exist in darkness, for at least a few hours a day.

The main goal of our project is to raise awareness on the subject of artificial light pollution. For our location we chose one of the last darkest places in Europe - Izera Dark Sky Park in Poland. Our idea is to create over a kilometer land art, which gives people the opportunity to observe a slice of the sky as in the theater - theater of light. at the same time, by the scale of solution, it puts us in mind of how small we are... The symbolic circle, which as a shape is often used in planetariums, contains many metaphysical metaphors... Referring to cyclicality, earth, sky or eternal connection. In our project, it is also a reinterpretation of the ancient theater, in which, through the architectural composition, the viewer's attention was focused on the stage ...

In the case of our land art, we provoke viewers through a hollow, raw ditch to look at the sky. Due to the rapid development of technology and the expansion of cities, huge demand of artificial light is created. For this reason, artificial light around the world completely absorbs the darkness we need. The presented maps show how this pollution works in Europe, in Poland and in the Izera Mountains. We can easily see that the place that we have chosen for our manifesto is one of the last dark places in Europe located in the Izera Mountains. Where is also a place of Polish-Czech cross-border Izera Dark Sky Park.

For years artificial light has been polluting our atmosphere - that is why we wanted to create something which will admire not only natural darkness beauty but also the daylight changing through the day. Humans need to appreciate small lights on the celestial sphere above us - stars, Milky Way the same as the beauty of winter sunrise. We wanted to show that darkness is the same component of the natural environment as the air, soil, water and rocks..

Our project is a direct reference to an ancient theater in which the viewer experiences different types of scenes and emotions, which culminate in the expected catharsis. Comparing the diversity of this process, we have created the hollow circle which will allow viewers to observe different pieces of the sky, let them find their own slice. Just like in art, the best way to see and feel something is to create a bond between viewer and the piece of art, which in this case is the all-embracing sky. A long wooden bench leads to the theater circle which is a kind of guidance that allows us to stop at every moment of the road and admire the beautiful light scattering around us. We wanted our project to be only a background for light, a tool to observe it, a quiet place for rest and concentration. The theater of light teaches sensitivity to seemingly imperceptible...

Currently South Africa faces a growing housing crisis forcing large portions of the population to create informal houses as their homes. This project seeks to solve the issues that arise from Light Sources, Heat Retention and Lack Of Airflow in the informal houses. Solutions that do not require electricity, as that proves to be a scarce commodity in South Africa currently.

CONCEPT: My proposed Eco Air-Light, made of recycled plastic bottles, is designed to utilize the sunlight effectively in illuminating and cooling the tin homes.

The design aims at providing an ambient, sustainable lighting solution that improves visibility at night time in riverine communities, restoring the community life, spark and happiness that has been overshadowed by darkness in these communities nationwide, essentially a pedagogical "LET THERE BE LIGHT” The Device is made of disposed plastic dispenser bottles with an infused mini solar panel that stores solar energy from daylight, to light up LED panels within the plastic dispenser bottles which in turn is dispersed by the water contained in the plastic bottles. The device thus radiates lighting.

The project begins with the story of children in Casablanca. They play by garbage dumps because they have nowhere else to play. The gap between the rich and the poor is widening and losing their humanity around the world. We wanted to provide children in underprivileged areas with a new play facility where they could have rich sensory experiences through light. The space is filled with natural light during the day and bright outside at night, lighting the scene of the village, which was stark and unstable. We hope that this space of vitality will make energy in the village and further reduce the gap between regions.
